A good PCB layout for the TPS386040RGPR should prioritize thermal management, minimize noise, and ensure proper decoupling. Place the device near the power source, use a solid ground plane, and add decoupling capacitors close to the device. Refer to the TI application note 'TPS386040RGPR PCB Layout Guidelines' for more information.
Select an output capacitor with a low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and a high ripple current rating. A 10uF to 22uF ceramic capacitor with an X5R or X7R dielectric is a good starting point. Consider the output voltage, current, and frequency requirements of your application when selecting the capacitor.
The TPS386040RGPR has an absolute maximum input voltage rating of 42V. However, for reliable operation, it's recommended to keep the input voltage below 36V to ensure the device operates within its specified parameters.
The TPS386040RGPR has a built-in overcurrent protection feature. To implement it, connect a sense resistor (Rs) between the output and the GND pin. The device will limit the output current to the programmed value (set by the RILIM resistor) when the voltage across Rs exceeds 50mV.
The EN (Enable) pin is an active-high input that enables or disables the device. When EN is high, the device is enabled, and when EN is low, the device is disabled. Use the EN pin to turn the device on or off, or to implement a power-good signal in your application.
