Texas Instruments provides a recommended PCB layout in the TPS3780 application note (SLVAE04) that includes guidelines for component placement, routing, and thermal management to ensure optimal performance and minimize noise.
The output capacitor selection depends on the output voltage, output current, and desired ripple voltage. A general guideline is to choose a capacitor with a capacitance value of at least 10uF and a voltage rating of at least 1.5 times the output voltage. Additionally, consider the capacitor's ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and ESL (Equivalent Series Inductance) to ensure it can handle the output current and frequency.
Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 5.5V, the TPS3780 can handle input voltages up to 6V for short durations (e.g., during power-up or voltage transients). However, continuous operation above 5.5V is not recommended and may affect the device's reliability and performance.
The TPS3780 is rated for operation up to 125°C (TJ). However, the device's performance and reliability may degrade at high temperatures. It's essential to consider the thermal management and ensure the device's junction temperature (TJ) remains within the specified range. Additionally, consult the datasheet for derating information and thermal resistance values.
The TPS3780 does not have a built-in OVP feature. However, you can implement OVP using an external voltage monitor IC or a simple voltage divider circuit with a comparator. The voltage monitor IC can be connected to the output voltage and trigger a shutdown signal to the TPS3780 when the output voltage exceeds a predetermined threshold.
