Texas Instruments recommends a 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane, and to route the I2C lines as close to the device as possible, with a minimum of vias and 90-degree turns. Additionally, decoupling capacitors should be placed close to the device's power pins.
The TCA9617BDGKR has an internal pull-up resistor, but external pull-up resistors may be required depending on the bus capacitance. TI recommends calculating the total bus capacitance and selecting pull-up resistors accordingly, following the I2C bus specification guidelines.
The maximum cable length for the I2C bus depends on the bus speed and capacitance. As a general guideline, TI recommends keeping the cable length below 1 meter for standard-mode I2C (100 kHz) and below 0.3 meters for fast-mode I2C (400 kHz).
The TCA9617BDGKR has built-in fault detection capabilities, such as bus stuck detection and clock stretching. To implement fault recovery, TI recommends using a microcontroller to monitor the I2C bus and detect faults, and then implementing a recovery mechanism, such as resetting the device or re-initializing the bus.
TI recommends powering up the TCA9617BDGKR in the following sequence: VCC, then VIO, and finally the I2C bus. This ensures that the device is properly initialized and configured before the I2C bus is activated.
