A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate power plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital sections separate, and use a common mode filter to reduce EMI.
Use a twisted pair cable, keep the cable length under 4000 feet, and terminate the bus with a 120-ohm resistor at each end. Also, ensure that the transmitter and receiver are properly configured and synchronized.
The maximum cable length depends on the data rate and cable characteristics. As a general guideline, the SP3485EN-L supports cable lengths up to 4000 feet at a data rate of 10 Mbps.
The SP3485EN-L can be configured for half-duplex or full-duplex operation by setting the DE (Driver Enable) and RE (Receiver Enable) pins accordingly. For half-duplex, tie DE to RE. For full-duplex, tie DE to VCC and RE to GND.
Power up the device in the following sequence: VCC, then VEE, then logic inputs. Power down in the reverse sequence to prevent latch-up.
