Richtek provides a recommended PCB layout in their application note AND9231, which includes guidelines for thermal vias, copper pours, and component placement to minimize thermal resistance and ensure reliable operation.
The output capacitor selection depends on the output voltage, output current, and desired ripple voltage. Richtek recommends using a low-ESR capacitor with a minimum capacitance of 10uF and a voltage rating of at least 1.5 times the output voltage. A X5R or X7R ceramic capacitor is a good choice.
Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 18V, Richtek recommends limiting the input voltage to 15V to ensure reliable operation and prevent damage to the internal components.
Richtek recommends using an external OVP circuit, such as a voltage supervisor IC or a zener diode, to detect overvoltage conditions and disconnect the input power supply. The RT8231BGQW does not have built-in OVP.
The minimum input voltage required for the RT8231BGQW to operate is 6.5V, although the datasheet specifies a minimum input voltage of 5.5V. Operating below 6.5V may result in reduced performance and efficiency.
