MC3486D Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • TI recommends a 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane, and placing the MC3486D close to the battery and away from noisy components. Additionally, use a ferrite bead or a 10nF capacitor in series with the input capacitor to filter out high-frequency noise.

  • To minimize IQ, ensure the EN pin is driven by a low-impedance source, use a high-value resistor (e.g., 1MΩ) for the feedback network, and minimize the output capacitor value. Also, consider using a low-IQ mode by connecting the EN pin to VIN.

  • Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 18V, TI recommends limiting the input voltage to 15V to ensure reliable operation and minimize the risk of damage.

  • To ensure stability, use a minimum output capacitor value of 10μF, and ensure the output capacitor's ESR is less than 1Ω. Additionally, place a 10nF capacitor in parallel with the output capacitor to filter out high-frequency noise.

  • While the MC3486D is rated for operation up to 125°C, TI recommends derating the output current by 1.5mA/°C above 85°C to ensure reliable operation. Also, consider using a heat sink or thermal pad to dissipate heat.
