A good PCB layout for the MAX31855TASA+ involves keeping the thermocouple traces as short as possible, using a dedicated ground plane, and minimizing noise coupling from other components. A 4-layer PCB with a dedicated thermal zone is recommended. Refer to the application note AN1549 for more details.
Calibration involves trimming the internal offset and gain of the device. This can be done using the CALMODE pin and the CALREG register. Refer to the datasheet section 7.3 for the calibration procedure. It's recommended to calibrate the device in a temperature-controlled environment.
The MAX31855TASA+ can measure temperatures from -200°C to +1350°C, depending on the type of thermocouple used. However, the device itself has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +150°C.
The MAX31855TASA+ has an internal cold-junction compensation (CJC) circuit that can be enabled or disabled. When enabled, the device uses an internal thermistor to measure the cold-junction temperature. The CJC circuit can be calibrated using the CJCTRM register.
The recommended power-up sequence is to apply VCC first, followed by the thermocouple connections, and then the digital interface connections. This ensures that the device powers up correctly and avoids any potential damage.
