A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate analog ground plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use a low-ESR capacitor for decoupling and place it close to the device.
The MAX31855KASA+T has an internal CJC sensor. Connect the CJC pin to a thermocouple or a thermistor to measure the ambient temperature. The device will then compensate for the cold junction temperature automatically.
The MAX31855KASA+T is compatible with K-type thermocouples. Use a thermocouple with a shielded cable and connect the shield to the AGND pin. Ensure the thermocouple is properly insulated and protected from electromagnetic interference.
Calibration is not required for the MAX31855KASA+T, as it is a plug-and-play device. However, you can perform a system-level calibration by measuring the temperature using a reference thermometer and adjusting the offset and gain of the device accordingly.
The maximum cable length depends on the thermocouple type, cable quality, and noise environment. As a general guideline, keep the cable length below 10 meters (33 feet) to minimize noise and ensure accurate measurements.
