Fairchild recommends a 2-layer or 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a thermal relief pattern under the IC to improve thermal dissipation. A minimum of 2 oz copper thickness is recommended for the top and bottom layers.

To ensure stable operation with a high-ESR output capacitor, Fairchild recommends adding a 1-2nF ceramic capacitor in parallel with the output capacitor to reduce the effective ESR. Additionally, the output capacitor should be placed close to the IC to minimize parasitic inductance.

The maximum allowed voltage on the EN pin is 6V. Exceeding this voltage may damage the IC. It is recommended to use a voltage divider or a clamp circuit to limit the voltage on the EN pin to 5.5V or less.

The power dissipation of the IC can be calculated using the following formula: Pd = (Vin x Iin) + (Vout x Iout) + (Rds(on) x Iout^2). Where Vin is the input voltage, Iin is the input current, Vout is the output voltage, Iout is the output current, and Rds(on) is the on-state resistance of the internal FET.

Fairchild recommends using a 10-22uF ceramic or film capacitor with an X7R or X5R dielectric as the input capacitor. The capacitor should be placed close to the IC and have a low ESR to minimize input voltage ripple.
