A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate analog ground plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use a low-ESR capacitor for power decoupling.
Use a shielded cable for the RS-232 interface, and consider using a common-mode choke or ferrite bead to filter out electromagnetic interference (EMI). Also, ensure proper grounding and decoupling of the device.
The maximum cable length depends on the baud rate and cable quality. As a general guideline, use a cable length of up to 50 feet (15.24 meters) for baud rates up to 115.2 kbps. For longer cables, consider using a repeater or a more robust transmission protocol.
Use a human body model (HBM) ESD protection device, such as a TVS diode, on the RS-232 lines. Ensure that the ESD protection device is rated for the maximum voltage and current of the ADM213EARUZ.
Power up the device in the following sequence: VCC, then VEE. Ensure that VCC is stable before applying VEE. This sequence helps prevent latch-up and ensures reliable operation.
