Texas Instruments provides a recommended PCB layout in the DRV10963DSNR evaluation module user's guide (SLVUAE4). It's essential to follow this layout to ensure proper operation and minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI).
The sense resistor value depends on the motor current and the desired current sense accuracy. A smaller sense resistor value provides better accuracy but increases the power loss. A good starting point is to use the recommended value in the datasheet (0.1 ohm) and adjust based on your specific application requirements.
The VREG pin is an internal voltage regulator output that can be used to power external circuitry. It's recommended to use a capacitor (e.g., 1 uF) to filter the output and ensure stability. However, be aware that the VREG pin is not intended to power the entire system, and its current capability is limited (typically up to 10 mA).
The DRV10963DSNR has a built-in overcurrent protection feature. To implement it, connect the sense resistor to the IS pin, and set the OCP threshold using the OTP pin. The device will automatically shut down if the current exceeds the set threshold. You can also use the FAULT pin to detect overcurrent conditions and take appropriate action.
The DRV10963DSNR is a dual-in-line package (DIP) version, while the DRV10963PWP is a power pad package (PWP) version. The PWP package has an exposed thermal pad that can be connected to a heat sink or a thermal plane on the PCB, allowing for better thermal dissipation. The DIP package does not have this feature.
